The test motor was a two-pole three-phase induction motor with rated output power of 3 HP (2.24 kW). To change the speed of the motor, a variable-speed controller was attached to the test rig between the power line source and the AC motor. The controller can be programmed to any specific shaft rotation speed between 0 and 3600 RPM. Hence, variable-speed rotation of the motor can be simulated. A gearbox was used to reduce the output shaft rotation speed. To apply the load, a magnetic brake unit was employed on the output shaft. The brake unit had an adjustable load range of 0-70 lb-in (0-7.9 Nm).
One Hall Effect current sensor and two accfelerometers were used to acquire the stator current and vibration signature's. One accelerometer was placed on the top of the motor in the radial direction and the other was on the right-hand side surface along the axial direction. Two motor conditions were simulated in the tests: normal and one broken rotor bar. The tests were conducted under five speed and four load conditions. The speeds were increased from that corresponding to 15 Hz up to that corresponding to 55 Hz with a step of 10 Hz each time. At each speed, four loads were applied to the gearbox output shaft at the percentage of 0, 33%, 66% and 100% of the maximum 70 lb-in. To reduce the background noise and other interferences, 10 segments of data were acquired under each test condition (for example speed and load). The data were sampled, using a National Instruments 4-channel 24-bit resolution A/D card PCI-4474, at 1 kHz and for 20 s. This enabled comparisons to be made between normal and faulty motor conditions at discrete frequency and load conditions. In order to determine the correlation between the current and vibration signatures, start-up data were also measured while the motor was running from'0 Hz to 55 Hz. The sampling rate was 1 kHz and the data length was 30 s.
