Testing the GPCM
This is a simple 12VDC relay. As you can see form the pic below.
There are several pins.
The Large Pin is the Common 12vcd supply. This always has 12vdc when plugged in, we will test this after.
The 6 pins above the large pin are for the Glow Plugs, I believe this relay is used for the 2.0 and 3.0, this would explain 6 pins. We only need the top 4 on the 2.0. When the relay is energized you will get continuity(the relay closes) between the large pin and the 6 small pins. When you have it energized you can test this with your multi meter.
The two pins on either side of the large pin are for the relay coil, this is what energises the relay. To test the relay apply 12vcd to these pins. You should hear the relay click on and off and you apply 12vdc and take it away.
With the relay energized(12vdc applied to small pins on either side of large pin) test continuity between the large pin and each of the 6 small pins. You should get close to 0 if not 0, this indicates closed. With the relay de-energized you should get no continuity, or infinite, this indicated contacts open.If the relay energizes and you get continuity, the relay is good.
if the relay does not close, and you get nothing. the relay is bad.
You can pick up a new relay at the dealership for about $90 part number 038-907-281-D
if you had a bad relay, than get a new one and replace it. Test everything again to ensure the new relay functions. if it does than great.
if your relay was good than there is another issue. Move on to next step
Step 6
lets test the GPCM harness plug. You will need VCDS to do this.
You may want a couple spade crimps to help test this.
You will need to have your battery installed for this test. Ensure the harness is accessible with the battery installed. You should be able to swing it around near the fuse box panel and get the battery in and connected easily.
With batter installed. Test the large plug for the large pin of the relay. This plug/pin must always have 12VDC to it, assuming the bridge and fuse are good.
If it does not have 12vdc than you will need to trace the wires back to the fuse box and find the broken or loose wire/connection. You may need to remove the fuse box for this. If someone needs this I can do a post on how to remove the fuse box, but I believe there are some videos for this out there.
if you have 12VDC than we need to see if we are getting power to the relay coil. with VCDS hooked up and loaded. Select teh Engine Control Module. Select Output tests. In here you will select the Glow Plug Control Module. Start the test. this test will turn the GPCM on and off several times.
With your multi meter you now need to test between the two small pins/plugs beside the large plug. You should be getting 12VDC coming on and off as the program tests. If you are getting 12VDC than the relay should be energizing. Plug the relay in, and see if you hear it energizing. If it does than the relay is good, and the control is good.
if it doesn't energize than you either have a bad relay, or a bad connection at the plug/harness. Maybe not pushed in enough. Inspect to ensure good clean connections and no loose or damaged wiring.
If it does energize, and you still have issues after performing all these test than you will need to trace the wires back to the glow plugs and test the glow plugs themselves
